To track stats with Basketball Stats Star, click on the player first, and then, track the stat.  Here’s how it works:  If Mark takes a shot and makes it — here’s how you record it.  Click on the player, in this case Mark, click on Made Shot and click on the court where the shot was taken.  Note how made shots are circled with the player’s number in the circle.  3-pointers are calculated automatically based on the location you click on the floor.  See how the score goes up by 3 when a shot is made beyond the 3-point line.  Missed shots will have the player’s number without a circle.

Basketball Stats Star was designed by Tom McCoy.  McCoy, who played college basketball, is a computer programmer by trade.  As a coach and team manager for his 4 childrens’ basketball teams, he was frequently called on to keep stats for the team using paper and pencil.

Seeing an opportunity to improve the process, McCoy set about the create the best way to keep track of basketball stats for his daugher’s high school basketball team digitally.  Over a 2 year span, he talked to high school coaches, developed the program and began testing it at games.  The input from coaches, and his own hands-on experience, let him to introduce several new features and adjustments to make Basketball Stats Star both easier to use and more meaningful for coaches.  To gain additional marketing research, McCoy shared the program with many coaches at all levels of play.  Their feedback and his improvements to the program have made Basketball Stats Star a very effective tool for basketball coaches.
